I purchased this phone over two months ago through e-bay, the cheapest way to buy phones if you are not going for a plan. I needed a smart phone, I narrowed my choices down to a few available models based on specifications, functions and available software. Of all the phones I looked at this had the best specs for its form factor.

  • Size : 115mm long  x 62mm wide x 12 mm deep
  • CPU : 528 MHz
  • RAM : 288 MB
  • ROM : 512 MB
  • 480 x 800 pixel resolution touchscreen
  • Accelerometer ( for motion and tilt detection )
  • microSD expansion slot , mine shipped with a n 8 GB card included.
  • Networks : GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, UMTS 850, UMTS 2100
  • Data and connections : GPRS, WAP, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA
  • Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS receiver
  • OS : Windows Mobile 6.1
  • 5-megapixelCamera which also takes video.
  • Voice recording
  • SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, E-mail (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP)
  • Ring tones : Monophonic, Polyphonic, AMR, MP, WAV
  • FM radio
  • Standard 3.5mm headphone socket
  • USB2.0 is used to synch with a micro usb port on the device.
  • Standard accessories : Manual, Software (Windows), Charger, Stereo headset, USB cable

It's funny how far we have come, this phone is more powerful than the first real computer I ever owned and it has far more features. The above list is a pretty complete spec list , but aside from the hardware specs many features are, or can be implemented through software. Some reviews I have read say there is no included voice recording or GPS navigation software, mine had both right out of the box. The standard software or extras included may vary due to your method of purchase . Phone carriers and vendors tend to include their own branding and customisations to a phone.

HTC HD and software

The user interface, Touch Flow, is nice and very finger friendly if you can't be bothered getting out the stylus.
The phone has a few neat tricks, actions can be performed by removing the stylus or placing the phone face down.
Mine is set to open my notes program when I remove the stylus during a phone call. I also have it set to disable the ring tone if I place it face down on a table.( useful during meetings, at restaurants etc )
Windows mobile has come a long way. My experience with Windows Mobile 6.1 has been good, no major bugs or crashes in 2 months, but be aware that this isn't just a phone , it's a computer for your pocket. If used in the same manner as a computer you will experience the same problems of a computer.
You can install a wide variety of applications (free and commercial) there are literally thousands of applications to choose from.
As with your home computer you are responsible for what you install and if you add broken software it will affect the functionality of the phone. I have only had the phone freeze once, I had installed 2 programs of the same type ( phone locking software) so there may have been conflicts caused by the 2 applications competing to perform the same action. I uninstalled one and it’s been all good since.
If you are interested in modifying the phones behaviour and abilities beyond the standard there are communities available. XDA developers has a large library of information about tweaking or modifying many windows based mobile phones as well as links to free applications and tutorials.

EDITORS NOTE: XDADevelopers is not a support forum or general software / tutorials downloads website. As the name implies it is a site for people to develop software and hacks for the applicable mobile smart devices. If you go to their site please be respectful. Read their Wiki and forums before posting. It is a place that is well respected and hosts a large amount of advanced information regarding the available devices.

(Below is a video from Youtube, it was produced by PocketNow.com )

Pros

  • It is stylish with a very large , high quality screen, images are displayed beautifully and video reproduction is smooth, YouTube video plays very well and other formats are supported.
  • The camera produces some very good images, it is easy to use and offers quite a few options when taking photos. It is not a replacement for a good digital camera but it is very competent.( below is an example of an arty nature shot I took with the camera)
  • The user interface is very attractive, easy to use, intuitive and responsive. Early adopters reported some lag in the user interface. I experienced this myself but HTC has released a few patches, found here, the application of the patch fixed the issue for me.
  • Wi-Fi connects without fuss, and is very good. I connect at home to my wireless router (Billion 7404vgp) and can surf the net or watch YouTube videos without any problems, the YouTube streaming over the network is fluid. I usually connect to open wireless hotspots in my area to retrieve data, so I can't really comment on the G connection to the net.
  •  I have a SONY stereo with Bluetooth in my lounge room and it pairs easily with it. I can then stream music and control the volume with the built in media player of the phone.
  • Texting is good with a few choices for input. ( on screen keyboard or stylus with hand writing )
  • There is a large variety of applications both free and commercial which allow for you to customise the phones appearance and functions.
  • The GPS , I love it, mine came pre-installed with TOMTOM software. I have never had a GPS device before so I have very little to compare it to. I just like the feature.
  • microSD expansion slot ,3.5 mm headphones, FM radio = a replacement for my mp3 player, one less device in my handbag.

Cons

  • It's one of the most expensive smart phones available, you do pay a price for the functionality.
  • The buttons at the bottom of the phone seem too close to the screen.  The soft buttons are also at the bottom of the touch screen, when I first got the phone I would attempt to tap the menu but I would also accidentally click the button below it as well. It takes a while to get use to and I still do it occasionally when I am not paying attention.
  • Lag ...  UI lag was fixed with the patches but by default if you click the X button of a program it will minimise. There are settings and free programs you can use to alter this behaviour. If the phone seems slow I always open my application list to see if I have left other programs running in the background by accident.
  • There is a large variety of applications both free and commercial which allow for you to customise the phones appearance and functions. Yep I placed this in the pro's section too , it's here because there is a potential to really mess up your phone if you install or modify the wrong thing. This is a communications device first and foremost, be careful with any additions you might install, conflicting programs may cause errors.
  • Heat, under continuous heavy load the device will generate a fair bit of excess heat.
  • GPS I have no previous experience with GPS devices but this does seem to lag by a few meters when travelling over 75 Km/h
  • No flash - The camera doesn't have a flash or a light.

Final Thoughts

If you have read the whole review you can probably tell that I love this device. It is simply the best phone I have owned to date.
If you are a gadget freak, business user, or someone who would like to cut down on the number of devices they carry then I would recommend this to you.
If you just need a phone and an mp3 player or you have a lot of trouble with your home PC then I would recommend something simpler.

Many people asked why I didn't buy an i-Phone, if you do your research or even just look at the listing on this site  you can see the i-Phone is a different class of device. At the risk of upsetting the Apple fan boys It is my opinion the i-Phone is a well marketed phone, it is not however a smart phone.
From a technical point of view the i-Phone has good hardware, but it was hobbled by Apple. It is just missing too many features, the battery is not user replaceable which is a revenue earning tactic from Apple that limits the life of the phone. The i-Phone is right for some people , but it's just not right for me and that's what it all comes down to in the end.

What do you need ?

The HTC HD is heaps better than the i-phone.

The image in the attachment is huge, good detail though, nice review. I bought one of these and I don't think I could ever go back to a "dumb" phone again.

It should be, it hasn't been crippled by the manufacturer

The hardware is much better and it hasn't been crippled by the manufacturer. Thats the main problem with Apple, they sell you a product but they want to maintain control.
The iphone is a good phone if you just want something with a bit of style but compared to more modern mobiles it doesn't have the features that a tech savy user might need.

This all seems pretty accurate. The phone, depending on use and your service provider,They can have a few quirks but as mentioned here additional free software, tweaks and updates can fix them. You can even go as far as installing custom cooked roms. Check out XDA developers they have a few realy stable customised roms.
