2003 Nvida was accused of manipulating drivers to gain higher scores on 3dmark03 benchmarking software. This software was and is used by review sites to gauge the speed and improved performance of video cards. The manipulation was set to act only when certian programs were running. (3dmark03)

Thats the whole point
Thats the whole point, they shouldn't. Thats kind of what this website is for.
"you are better off trying to use a game as a benchmark anyway."
That was in 2003 or 2004. It is one of the reasons why today more reviews use games like Crysis as benchmarks and rely less on the synthetic tests to assess a cards performance. Ati was caught doing this as well but I can't find an article to add.

As far as the drivers are concerned it's just part of the industry, you are better off trying to use a game as a benchmark anyway.
